These adorable little creatures are becoming more and more popular with people of all ages. Hamsters, Chinchillas, and other small animals require such an  easily manageable amount of care and space; they are perfect for your child's first pet. With such a variety of personalities, they are will suited for all living situations, from apartments to houses.  Our small animal staff would be delighted to answer any questions you may have about your pet.


Guinea Pig

Guinea pigs that become familiar with their owner will whistle on the owner's approach and learn to whistle in response to the rustling of plastic bags or the opening of refrigerator doors, where their food is most commonly stored.  These timid explorers often hesitate to attempt an escape from their cage even when an opportunity presents itself.  They show considerable curiosity when allowed to walk freely, especially in familiar terrain.

  • Life Span: 3-6 years

Ferret

These smart, sociable, and curious animals became more common as a house hold pet in 1980.  Ferrets make entertaining, affectionate pets if their owner takes the time to bond with them. They love to spend their waking hours playing and socializing with their owner and each other. They are usually happiest with one or two companions.

  • Adult Size: 13-15 inches long, plus 3-4 inches for the tail
  • Life Span: 6-10 years

Chinchilla

These timid animals may take a while to be at ease with its human friends. However, once trust has been established they are relatively easy to train and can even be taught to use a littler box.  These large ears fluff balls come in a variety of colors; white, black velvet, beige, ebony, violet, and sapphire.

  • Adult Size: 12 inches, 15 pounds
  • Life Span: Up to 20 years

Hamster

These cute little creatures come in a variety of shapes and sizes; from dwarf to teddy bear.  They are most famous for the way they store their food in their puffy cheeks.  Many hamsters are solitary animals that must be kept singly in order to avoid fighting.

  • Adult Size: 1-3 inches
  • Life Span: 1-3 years

Gerbil

Clean and virtually odorless the gerbil is a spectacular jumper. Their powerful hind legs can launch them out of any open enclosure.  So make sure you have a secure top!  A common misunderstanding when purchasing a home for pet gerbils is they can live in housing designed for hamsters and mice, however they love to dig tunnels and tend to chew through the little plastic house.  

  • Adult Size: 3-6 inches, plus 3-8 inches for the tail
  • Life Span: 3-4 years

Rat

Rats are easily tamed and make great pets with proper care and companionship. They love the company of humans and can often be taught simple tricks like "stay".  Intelligent, inquisitive, and resourceful rats will amaze every age.

  • Adult Size: 13-18 inches including tail
  • Life Span: 2-3 years

Mouse

These active, social, and somewhat shy animals are becoming more popular as pets. Easy to care for and fun to watch these tiny creatures will yield hours of energetic entertainment.
